A Structured Route Through Northern Spain

A calm, considered itinerary for European motorhome travel along Spain’s northern coast

Northern Spain rewards a slower pace. From Basque coastal towns to the green hills of Galicia, this region is well suited to European motorhome travel.

This structured route offers clarity and flow. It connects culture, coastline and countryside in a way that feels natural when travelling by motorhome.

Starting Point: San Sebastián

San Sebastián is a refined place to begin. Its crescent-shaped La Concha beach and compact old town make it easy to explore on foot.

Motorhome-friendly campsites sit just outside the centre, with public transport connections into town. Spend a day enjoying the seafront promenade and the city’s relaxed rhythm before heading west.

Bilbao and the Basque Coast

Less than two hours away, Bilbao blends industrial heritage with modern design. The Guggenheim Museum remains the architectural centrepiece.

Continue along the Basque coastline towards Gaztelugatxe. The roads are winding but manageable in a well-prepared motorhome. Take your time. Distances are short, and the scenery improves with every mile.

Cantabria: Mountains Meet the Sea

Cantabria offers balance. Coastal towns such as Santander provide easy parking and well-equipped campsites. Inland, the Picos de Europa introduce dramatic mountain landscapes.

If you prefer gentler driving, base yourself near the coast and take a day trip into the mountains. This region is ideal for families seeking variety without long driving days.

Asturias: Green and Undisturbed

Asturias feels quieter. Rolling hills, small fishing villages and wide Atlantic beaches define this stretch of the journey.

Towns like Cudillero and Llanes are compact and welcoming. Wild camping rules vary, so use designated motorhome areas or campsites where possible.

Driving here is relaxed. Roads are scenic but not demanding, making it a comfortable stage of the route.

Galicia: The Journey’s Natural Conclusion

Galicia marks a subtle shift. The coastline becomes more rugged, the culture distinctly Celtic in character.

End your journey in Santiago de Compostela. Its cathedral square provides a calm, architectural finale after days spent tracing the Atlantic edge.

Planning Northern Spain by Motorhome

This route works best over 10–14 days. Daily distances are manageable, leaving time to explore without rushing.

  • Plan campsite stops in advance during peak summer months.
  • Check low-emission zones in major cities.
  • Carry European breakdown cover and the required safety equipment.
  • Allow flexibility for coastal weather changes.

Northern Spain pairs well with a longer European motorhome itinerary. From Dorset, you can travel via France before crossing into Spain, building the journey gradually.
